check out this PRIZE! who's gonna win? I'm so EXCITED!

HEY YOU GUYS!!!

It is time for me to do MY book giveaway! I’ll bet you were all thinking that I was never going to  give away a copy of the book I wrote – HA! I fooled you! Not only are we giving away a copy of The Edible Front Yard, my lovely publisher, Timber Press, has generously added a copy of the Sugarsnaps and Strawberries (written by the amazing Andrea Bellamy of Heavy Petal) to the mix! And that isn’t ALL! The fabulous folks at GrowOrganic.com, the online home of Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply, have created a special custom seed collection inspired by the “Supermodels” of ornamental edibles that I list in my book! 20 packets of gorgeous, certified organic, non-GMO seeds were donated – thank you Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply (find them online at GrowOrganic.com)! The coolest, sexiest, warm AND cool season Supermodels Seeds will be sashaying their way around some lucky winner’s front yard – How awesome is THAT? And then there is a special present from me – a framed cartoon that I drew with my very own hands, depicting a few of the beauties that were making their presence known in my garden this year – before I ATE THEM!

an image of my garden from The Edible Front Yard - pretty pics in this book, if I do say so myself!

So here we go! Leave your comments and in one week, we will have a winner! Go crazy with your comments – woo me! The winner will be chosen randomly, but still – woo me! I like to be flattered and purred over, and I want to know how you plan on using this treasure chest of goodies should you win!

MEOW!

XOXO Your Germinatrix

  1. I agree with Jenny- your book is adorable, but you are FRICKIN’ adorable! And I 100% stand behind you in your grand plan to have the world remove their front lawn for pretty edibles!

  2. Dana Stein says:

me me me pick me please with tofu and sugar on top!
    ThankU, Dana

  3. I would love to get your book! I have moved from an urban lot in Boston to the suburbs of San Antonio and I am absolutely chomping at the bit to get rid of huge swaths of grass in our yard! If I’m going to water stuff in this drought, I want to eat it later!

  4. Would love to get this. It’s on my wish list and just haven’t pushed the “add to cart” button yet. Winning it would be even better. We’re planning on making part of our front yard edible next year.

  5. If fairy godmother’s come in cool clothing then you are her!! I run the school garden at my school and the cooking teacher just put in a very tall order of herbs she’d like us to grow. I am sweating bullets on how I’m going to find, plant and pray they survive first semester. Winning this contest would be so delightful and make a big impact on my middle school gardeners :) .

  6. Oh Darling, what would I do with the loot?
Having gardening friends, I would likely share at least some of the bounty. We could each plant some and then do a cook-out bringing it all back together. Finally, we will clink glasses and toast you my dear, for being our benefactor!

  7. Had problems with the captcha hence the near identical comments

  8. Ripping out my grass this spring and would love this giveaway! Great blog!

  9. Great collection!

  10. I borrowed a copy of THE EDIBLE FRONT YARD from my library, and, sadly as with all library books, I needed to return it…. It would be great to have my own copy so that I don’t need to keep borrowing it, thus keeping it from others! Thanks for the great ideas!

  11. I get just as excited when I pick my herbs. If I won it would put the biggest smile on my face ever!

  12. What a perfect way to be able to start my new garden from the ground up. It would be not only beautiful, but edible too!

  13. Congratulations on a great book!

  14. I have just found your site – looks great! I can’t wait to read through properly
I have a front garden veggie patch at my house in Melbourne Australia – and I wholeheartly agree with the idea of using the idle space at the front of the house for productive means.
I’d love your book to read through in detail what you have done – with a view to improving our garden.

Carrots, parsnips, turnips, broccolini just harvested sitting on my kitchen sink, waiting to be roasted for dinner.

  15. Wow… you really are giving away some treasures! I’m so excited to have found your blog and can’t wait to read through it. I will be stopping by regularly now.

Would *love* the book, of course!

  16. Christine Michels says:

Very beautiful and inspiring pictures! Whittling away at my front lawn every year. Putting in edibles are the next step. What a really inspiring prize to win here! Now to check out this interesting blog.

  17. Woo-woo!!!!! Love the pics and can’t wait to incorporate some edibles in my front yard. We have a corner lot and on one side is our vegetable garden with raised beds (new this year). Would love to have some ‘sexy’ seeds to plant. Baskets of seeds and books all look fabulous!

  18. The framed cartoon is my favorite part!

  19. Edible Gardening is truly the one thing I am most passionate about!

  20. KC Michelle says:

Love both of those books and would love to own them!

  21. My 3 daughters (7, 10, 12) and I are truly inspired by what you’ve done and would love to use your ideas in our garden! We can’t wait to win!!

  22. YOU and your book are amazing!! I live in a “master planned” community here in SoCal and just took out my front lawn, much to the “gasp” of all my neighbors. I put in 5 raised beds, but the rest is barren. I REALLY, really need your book (and goodies) for my next move to put the final touches on my yard. I want everyone who sees it, not only to “ooh and ahh”, but to rethink about what a yard can be. Thank you for the opportunity and for your inspiring blog!!

  23. Marj Myers says:

Growing something we can eat is the most rewarding thing we can do as humans. Winning this great prize would inspire me to plant things and each time I picked something, I would see your beautiful smiling face and I would smile too.

  24. Hi. I have always grown my flowers and vegetables from seedlings I buy from the nurseries. However, I would like to grow unusual varieties and types next year. Would love the book as a friendly guide. Thanks for offering.

  25. The cover is adorable, but you are even more adorable! I would love to win, we have been thinking about replacing more of our yard with edibles. :)

  26. Janet Clause says:

Would LOVE to win! Back yard gets no sun. Front yard, full sun. Need ideas!!!

  27. As editor/webmaster for our High Desert Garden Club, I am always looking for resources to mention in the newsletter. So I am already a winner as I look at the topics in your archives. I can’t wait to try the Red-Headed Mule.

So your site will be added beside Dirt du jour (where I found your link) in my file of noteworthy websites for our members.

  28. Kathy Rose says:

Would love to win your book and all the goodies!!! :>))
And, glad to have found your blog (courtesy of today’s dirt du jour, thank you.

You inspire me; keep having fun and writing about it!

  29. I’ve been telling people to ditch their lawns (literally!) and plant veggies in the dtiches for years. Every book and every instructor who tells their students to grow their own organic food is a step in the right direction. Kudos to you for writing this book!

  30. I’m in the planning stages of tearing up my grass and putting in a maze of edibles and I desperately need some assistance with the plant decisions. This would be the most amazing help to me, and motivation for the man to get on it!

  31. Love it. Unfortunatly, my town does not allow edible front yards. There has been much controversry about it. I would do it in a heart beat. So my back yard is my pallet. Keep up the work.

  32. Woo! Woo!

If I win I’ll use this as the start to getting rid of my ugly, inedible front lawn.

  33. Daniel Babcock says:

I am trying to find a yard to transform! My tamato’s seem to be working from seeds I harvested from some TJ Heirloom tamatos and it is time for me to move on to bigger projects! And Ivette is a good teacher wink wink nudge nudge

  34. Rebecca Walker says:

I am in awe of how creative you are! I have always dreamed of having my own raised bed edible garden. I plan on starting one as soon as we buy our own home next year. Your book is exactly what I need to help me accomplish that. Then I can show it off in the annual garden tours that are in my area of south orange county!

  35. Richard Tracy says:

Ivette; Great job in carrying on the mission of my good friend, Ros Creasy! I’m inviting you to join the Garden Writers of America..a great bunch of people. Google the web site..
    Dick Tracy

  36. Gerrad Lemon says:

I live in a city neighborhood and this year grew 5 varieties of tomatoes, 3 varieties of peppers, okra, cantaloupe, zuchinni, 3 varieites of carrots, parsnips, green beans, peas, cilantro, basil, asparagus, blueberries, and a even a lemon tree — all organic and all heirlooms — in my front yard. It’s wonderful to grow in the front yard!! I save my backyard for the kids to play and the chickens to roost. I would love to expand my front yard palette.

    Thank you!

  37. To say I envy your garden is an understatement!

Looks like Martha Stewart’s garden’s LOL!

I would love your book as I am just a so so gardener.

I am also low income, and I thought that I can grow some food for my family which would help on our food bill.

    Very interesting gift!

I hope whoever wins it will enjoy!

    Good luck everyone!! :)

  38. I have just built a raised bed and am excited to see what amazing veggies will grow in the “cool” season. I’ve been gardening for many years but don’t have much experience with veggies and I already know I need a book or two to help with this endeavor. Nothing takes the place of experience but a good book about veggies is just what this green thumb needs to be successful.

  39. Becky Comer says:

I have been wondering what to do with my front yard. I have a blank slate to start with. This is thee Perfect Solution. Beauty and Food all in one!

  40. This giveaway is awesome! Our library doesn’t have a great selection of readings, so winning this would be monumental! Spent this year getting my backyard veggie garden installed. This fall will be spent working on the food forest (mostly fruit and nut trees…and a hideout for my kitty) in the front yard.

  41. My wife and I are slowly building an Urban Farm at our suburban Virginia Beach home. Having these kinds of references would just bring it to reality that much more. We both love to read to find out how other people do things and possibly put our own spin it.

The cool thing with us is that after we have absorbed all the information in these great books (if we win, of course) we will run a giveaway on our blog to pass them on to another who may be journeying into the same.

Great giveaway as knowledge, and sharing that knowledge is power.

  42. Cynthia Stetson says:

Having a corner house, we have a lot of space to plant, plant & plant some more. Would so love this. Thank you

  43. I love your wonderful, funny, inspiring blog. I am getting closer to a lawnless front yard and have mixed herbs with my flowers. I know your book will help to to expand and grow!

  44. Shirley Fox says:

Oooh, I’d love to win this! I’ve been a fan since you first appeared in Garden Design mag. Your amazing style opened up so many new garden possibilities for me.

  45. This is a fun giveaway! I’ve been eyeing your boor for a while and would love to get it!

  46. Kristi pero says:

I really want to start growing more of my own food and need all the help I can get I like the idea of incorporating the ediable plants along the other plants. I have tried a few things but need to learn more. Thanks for offering us a the possiblity of learning more:-)

  47. What a wonderful giveaway, and at a perfect time to start planning for next year. All of my gardening is done in raised beds, and with what I try to grow, it really limits the practice of crop rotation somewhat. I’m ready to step outside of the box and start growing here, there, and everywhere. This giveaway would certainly give me the knowledge and ambition to make the unconventional conventional, and still be practical, while looking good in the process. Good luck to all who have entered!

  48. Greetings from the Midwest! I’m all about edible crops and unexpected plant combos. Thanks for all the great ideas!

  49. LOVE IT LOVE YOUR BOOK, but I don’t have a copy of it … i’m the unintentional “garden guru” of my block, so the pressure’s on me to get my front garden growing. yikes! would love something like this to kick start our block’s road to changing our front yards into edible/useful gardens! PICK ME!! thanks.

  50. What better way to connect with Mother Earth than to grow food, harvest, cook and enjoy. Nothing fresher, healthier and tastier than home grown.
