check out this PRIZE! who's gonna win? I'm so EXCITED!

HEY YOU GUYS!!!

It is time for me to do MY book giveaway! I’ll bet you were all thinking that I was never going to  give away a copy of the book I wrote – HA! I fooled you! Not only are we giving away a copy of The Edible Front Yard, my lovely publisher, Timber Press, has generously added a copy of the Sugarsnaps and Strawberries (written by the amazing Andrea Bellamy of Heavy Petal) to the mix! And that isn’t ALL! The fabulous folks at GrowOrganic.com, the online home of Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply, have created a special custom seed collection inspired by the “Supermodels” of ornamental edibles that I list in my book! 20 packets of gorgeous, certified organic, non-GMO seeds were donated – thank you Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply (find them online at GrowOrganic.com)! The coolest, sexiest, warm AND cool season Supermodels Seeds will be sashaying their way around some lucky winner’s front yard – How awesome is THAT? And then there is a special present from me – a framed cartoon that I drew with my very own hands, depicting a few of the beauties that were making their presence known in my garden this year – before I ATE THEM!

an image of my garden from The Edible Front Yard - pretty pics in this book, if I do say so myself!

So here we go! Leave your comments and in one week, we will have a winner! Go crazy with your comments – woo me! The winner will be chosen randomly, but still – woo me! I like to be flattered and purred over, and I want to know how you plan on using this treasure chest of goodies should you win!

MEOW!

XOXO Your Germinatrix

I’d love ideas to make our city yard a beautiful and edible landscape. Right now I have squash growing, but I’d love to use this to design something lovely.

Dearest, Inspiring Ivette, if I were to win this fantastic prize, I would use it in my home-schooling curriculum: kindergarten means dirty hands and, alongside that, learning by doing. My children already love working in the garden but ours desperately cries out for sense, reason and a whole lot more beauty. With or without winning, we are inspired by you to give our boys the pleasure and pride of transforming the earth in a helpful way — and sharing the beautiful bounty, both visual and edible, with our lovely neighbors. We will be the first in our neck of the woods with an edible front yard… But the best thing of all would be if you were to deliver it in person — then we would get to see you, too!! XOXO – Katy

  7. pick me, pick me!

  8. I’m so fortunate to have come accross & been introduced to this excellent website & book for my re-introduction to growing my own veggies/fruit. I used to garden as a youngster, but once I moved out of my parents as an adult, I couldn’t seem to find the time, & I had forgotten just how therapuetic & relaxing gardening is!

  9. Susan Knorr says:

Each year I take part of our lawn and return it to forest. Now I have just enough left for a putting green for my husband and a vegetable garden for me, plus a strip down to the lake for a view. I think that could be vegetable garden too, hmmm.

  10. Your cartoon drawing is so lovely. Thanks for having this contest!

  11. Hi Germinatrix,

Winning your fabulous price would meant for me to surely fall in love with your book (I am also converting my lawn into a potager), that I will continue to practice my english ( I’m french Canadian), that I’ll have money so I can buy milk for the children next week instead of books on gardening!

Anyway, even if I’m not the lucky one, I will still read your interesting blog that I just discovered!

    Au plaisir!

  12. I would love this, and your book too…how awesome

  13. I would love to have the…it’s awesome please include me in the drawing

  14. My husband and I tore out our lawn last spring, but it still looks a bit wonky – we could definitely use the book and the seeds! Keeping my fingers crossed….

  15. I would love to win. I would include these books in our homeschool curriculum. 5 kids could really get some use out of this!

  16. Ah! This would be lovely to win….almost as lovely as you. Frankly I would pass everything onto my 7 year old son who just happens to possess this amazing green thumb and a passion for all things Botany. He is the reason I can make and can fresh salsa (among other things )

  17. What a fabulous giveaway! We have an incredible backyard garden, but when it comes to planting in the front yard, I need some major inspiration. I love your blog and can’t wait to read the book!!!

I have a south facing sloped front yard begging to be transformed with beautiful edibles!! Winning this package would help me show the neighbors what is possible – with the guiding hand of The Germinatrix!

  19. Jackie Davis says:

Coming from a “Everything Nature” family, I always loved the smell of dirt and all the things that I was fortunate enough to eat from it. I was inspired by you and this book because I knew there were many more things I was missing and you helped me find many of them. Thank you for such a wonderful book…I’m just trying to figure out why in the world you didn’t make this book editable…..

  20. Oh man, what a great giveaway!

    I hope I win :)

  21. I would put the book to good use…with my 50+Junior Master Gardeners! We have 33 raised beds and garden year-round in Cumming, GA. We have the kidpower to transform our little part of the world! Thanks!

  23. Colleen Gallagher says:

I just moved into an apartment with a great patio and I want to make a fantastic patio garden with lots and lots of vegies. I plan on making my patio garden with my kids, 10, 10,8, & 6 yrs old. I love to cook and I am trying to teach them about fresh good food as much as I can. Colleen

  24. I saw this book at the store and wanted it so badly!

  25. Help me transform my Chicago balcony into a garden oasis of edible goodies! C’mon – pick me!

  26. Lisa Spivak says:

I love my herbs and am so thankful to have them readily available! I am trying to expand my garden to include different vegetables and herbs than I have had in the past. Since I love food and gardening and they do go hand in hand, I am eating a lot healthier than I have ever in my entire 50 yrs! I am always trying to share my enthusiasm for gardening and have begun sharing plants with friends. One of my younger friends is moving into a new home with her family and she has asked me for some of my herbs so she can have her own little herb garden next year. Of course I will be giving her some of what I have.
I never thought that my desire to have a little kitchen garden would have grown in the way it has for me and benefited me as well as my friends. :)

  27. Oh, how I would love to share your book with my kindergarten students! We have a square-foot garden in our yard, where we grow some veggies to eat throughout the year and The Edible Front Yard would add to the learning experience and teach the kids how they can have an important part in their own good nutrition.

  28. I would love this! I’d even share with my neighbors!

  29. I love having an edible front yard – strawberries, figs, grapefruit, mandarin oranges, avocados, apricots, squash, nasturtiums & lavender. Would live some new ideas. Thanks so much.

  30. I love gardening and love new ideas for gardening.

  31. Ohh nice! I may just have a garden patch here to plant them in! :)
Right now I have a ton of hergs growing on my deck here at the apartment. Mostly mint – for mojitos. :D

  32. Sounds like a wonderful idea, I would love this prize! Love your pics, makes me want to get out and start gardening right now, and it makes my 2 little square foot gardens look sad. :)

  33. Brooke - in Oregon says:

I would love to show more gardeners how to put together pretty, fun, simple and TASTY planters for a great garden! PS I found you from Life on the Balcony!

  34. I have lemon, orange, cherry and apricot seedlings growing right now so I can feed my family natural food in a couple years. I am also building a 16′x30′ garden this fall. I also have figs and walnuts and am starting some almond seeds right now. I want to go in my yard for my food, not the supermarket. If I was the winner I will make my 3 kids 7 and under plant all the seeds so they can learn about growing your own food.

  35. Kelly Moore says:

I would LOVE to win this- My barren little balcony is begging for color and life- I would use this to make a little sanctuary- and also- to support the front yard garden!!

  36. Love your blog!

  37. I heart you. I heart your book, but I heart you more!

  38. Random? Well I won’t try and impress you with my enthusiasm then … but I will treat my plants extra well so the karma comes back to me.

  39. Kristel Ohlhauser says:

Pick me! Pick me! I love gardening.

  40. This is amazing!! Hope I Win!!

  41. What a great this would be to win. I have always wondered how to integrate edible gardening in with my succulents.

  42. My neighbors would be so happy if I won and transformed my dead lawn into an edible oasis.

  43. I adore gardening !!!! This is fantastic… I would be thrilled to WIN…

  44. Another Chicago balcony gardener dropping by to say hi. I’ve been balcony gardening for several years now; and a few years ago, when I got a little plot in a community garden, graduated to the great outdoors. Never, did I anticipate how much enjoyment I would get from a little plot in the park, and the Sun Gold tomatoes aren’t bad either. Love, love, love gardening!

  45. me me me…pick me! :)

  46. Chelsea D. says:

Aw! I loooves the little picture! I’m a part time cashier, part time student at college and a full time mommy! I’ve recently gotten into gardening to promote a healthy lifestyle for my family and as a fantastic stress reliever. It also helps to be able to grow our own food on such a tight budget. This would help us out a lot, so I hope you’ll include us! (Btw, I love your blog-so inspirational and the pictures are fabulous!) :)

  47. Your site has inspired me to have a garden not only at my home but at my kids school. Just had a meeting with the school board and i’m awaiting an answer. Wish me luck!!!

  48. Your book is edgy, it empowers us to garden the way we need to in order fo feed ourselves, insted of how we “should”. Our wasted front yards all are time theives, and soil suckers, only taking from us and giving back NOTHING! I thank you for your creativity, strength and leadership. If I were to win your lovely book and the other wonderful prizes, I would put the book on display at my Garden Center with the framed art above it to tell the story…I would donate the seeds to a local Children’s Garden I am involved with. I love sharing great gardening ideas with my customers and inspiring them. Your book is definately one I would love to share!

  49. Love all you’re doing to encourage people to grow their own food! I’m seeing front yard gardens popping up in Chicago (slowly) and when I visit Seattle for work they’re all over the place. Thanks for the inspiration!

  50. I would love a copy of the book–at home I am slowly removing grass and adding fruit and veggies to my flower garden.
