Episode 3 -The Heart of the Hollywood Farmer’s Market

by germinatrix | March 12th, 2010

Stroll with me through the Hollywood Farmers’ Market and meet the wonderful Jimmy Williams, Los Angeles area organic vegetable gardening guru, and his son Logan. They are at the market on Ivar and Hollywood Blvd every Sunday, selling their superior wares – heirloom vegetables and herbs that you can’t get just anywhere, grown with loving care at their home just a few blocks away.

Jimmy is well known in the heirloom seed world – a tomato that his family passed down over the generations, ‘Goose Creek’, is a favorite among connoisseurs for its firm texture, beautiful shape, and tart/sweet flavor. His enthusiasm for growing food is infectious – he spreads the word of organic vegetable gardening every week, and those of us whose lives he’s impacted keep coming back for more!

It’s a noisy market, so listen up!

Enjoy!

  1. Jimmy is very generous and encouraging. I met him a while back. He gifted a 4″ container of onions and showed me how to untangle each plantlet.

  2. Great video!

  3. Awesome! We’ve got a farmer’s market just down the street from us on Saturdays. It’s nice to get to know some of the farmers & vendors personally.

  4. I want to try growing the purple artichoke – I’ve never seen such a thing! Thanks for the great video…very fun…

  5. Great fun! I can’t wait to get out and visit some of our local farmers markets. I am so lucky to live in a market rich area.

  6. Adriana! Hi! Isn’t Jimmy GREAT? He is so generous – I love that you can really feel his passion. Most of my food crops come from Jimmy!

Hi Plantiis! I’m glad you enjoyed this walk through the Farmer’s Market – it was so fun to do, but I always say that. I love making the videos, and it was extra fun hanging out with Jimmy and Logan.

Sweetness! I haven’t gone back to get those! What am I WAITING for? PURPLE ARTICHOKES??? I must have them NOW!

Hi Loree! You TOTALLY live in the Farmers’ Market/Locavore capitol of the world. You must have so much fun. Not only do I love the food, but the community spirit that sprouts up around each market is fascinating. Here in LA, each neighborhood Farmers’ Market has such a different character. This one I showed is very hipster Hollywood – but the one next to my house is super ethnic, where the vendors are predominantly Philipino. And then there is the one the next “town” over, which is full of kids – it’s like a carnival.
I LOVE the Markets! I’m glad you do to (I suspected as much!)
    XOXO!

  7. Wow, what a guy. Love his approachable, can-do energy. I suspect if I ever visited his stall, I’d walk away with waaaay too much good stuff. (But, is there such a thing?!) Edibles are my thing, thanks for doing this video!

  8. In the future when I am too busy/lazy to start my edibles from seed I am definitely going to make a beeline to the hollywood farmer’s market! In fact … I may just have to go there next weekend for some of these purple artichokes everyone is talking about. I am really impressed by the fact he runs his growing operation out of his home in Hollywood. Thanks for sharing :) I love your blog!
